THE ANCIENT OTRANTO HAMLET: A SITE ANNOUNCING THE CULTURE OF PEACE (UNESCO RECOGNITION 2010)

It was a town of martyrs, now it is a beacon of peace and Mediterranean culture: this is the transformation thanks to which the historical town of Otranto has been included in the list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. This is a place announcing peace, and those values that have been strenuously defended while making an effort to build bridges among very different cultures.

Walk the roads of Otranto - which has been keeping and nurturing its own myths linked to the story of its martyrs over the centuries -and you’ll experience unique emotions which you will never forget. The narrow alleys, its monuments and the ancient beauty of its historical centre: Otranto is a mesmerizing town, which will capture your gaze and steal your heart.

Lecce will fascinate you thanks to its incredible elegance: the façades of its buildings and its architecture characterising the streets and the squares of this town - which you don’t expect and which will surprise you thanks to its beauty that has been long hidden. This is the capital of the Apulian baroque, it is characterised by its old Messapian origins, and the Roman remains are mingled with the richness and exuberance of 1600s baroque style. Lecce stone churches and palaces are worth a visit, which is even more beautiful in the evening. The main cathedral and the square, the Santa Croce cathedral and Sant’Oronzo square make a fascinating visit.
