Although it is one of the smaller regions in Italy, Molise has surprising qualities. Molise is a mysterious land and it has extraordinary uncontaminated landscapes, environmentally-protected areas and nature reserve, stretching from the mountains down to the sea.
Molise is a land to discover through a journey into the past. It holds Palaeolithic settlements , archaeological remains from the Samnite and the time of Romans, to medieval monuments, towers, castles, and towns.
Molise has amazing traditions and also fine cuisine. What gives a unique experience is a true sentiment, which animates the community participating: the jealously-guarded customs and rites which are renewed at every patronal festival, convey the history of die community and mark its uniqueness.
The “Collemeluccio- Montedimezzo” reserve was the first natural area (1977) -among the Italian sites – registered as ” Biosphere Reserve” of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB).
lt encompasses two forests covering 637 hectares in a sub-mountain area and each forest as its own geomorphologic and vegetation characteristics. In 2014, Unesco approved the enlargement project of the reserve, including also the seven towns around the site: San Pietro Avellana, Vastogirardi, Carovilli, Pietrabbondante, Pescolanciano, Chiauci and Roccasicura.
